Further Research - Arctic Monkeys (Domino Records)

They began to grow in popularity across the north of England, receiving attention from BBC Radio and the British tabloid press. A local amateur photographer, Mark Bull, filmed the band's performances and made the music video to "Fake Tales of San Francisco", releasing it on his website, alongside the contents ofBeneath the Boardwalk – a collection of the band's songs which he named after a local music venue. In May 2005, Arctic Monkeys released their first single, Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys on their own 'Bang Bang' label, featuring the songs "Fake Tales of San Francisco" and "From the Ritz to the Rubble". This release was limited to 500 CDs and 1000 7" records, but was also available to download from the iTunes Music Store. Soon after, the band played at the Carling Stage of the Reading and Leeds Festivals, reserved for less known or unsigned bands. Their appearance was hyped by much of the music press and the band was watched by an unusually large crowd.

They signed to Domino in June 2005. The band said they were attracted to the "DIY ethic" of Domino owner Laurence Bell, who ran the label from his flat and only signed bands that he liked personally. The UK's Daily Star reported that this was followed in October by a £1 million publishing deal with EMI and a £725,000 contract with Epic Records for the United States.

Some artists and groups signed to Domino Records are as follows:
Arctic Monkeys
Franz Ferdinand
Lightspeed Champion
The Last of the Shadow Puppets

Prior to the release of the album, the tracks "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", "Fake Tales of San Francisco", "Dancing Shoes", "Still Take You Home", "Riot Van" , "Mardy Bum", "When the Sun Goes Down" (then known as "Scummy" or "Scummy Man") and "A Certain Romance" had been released for free via the internet in late 2004 and consolidated on the unofficial Beneath the Boardwalk compilation.

The album Whatever People say I am, That’s What I’m Not was originally due for release on the 30th January but due to popular demand they decided to bring the release date further to the 23rd January

The video is a live recording of the band playing the song in a studio with a small audience watching with both the video and audio taken live. The video was shot using television cameras from the 1970s to give it a more aged effect. American band The Strokes had previously made a similar music video for their single "Last Nite", Arctic Monkeys are known to be fans of The Strokes.

There were 6 covers of the track.

On 23 February 2006, the track won Best Track at the 2006 NME Awards - one of three awards won by Arctic Monkeys.
One of the b-sides, "Chun Li's Spinning Bird Kick", was nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in the 2007 Grammy Awards.
The song was also a hit in the United States, hitting #7 on the US Modern Rock Charts.

When asked about the popularity of the band's MySpace site in an interview with Prefix Magazine, the band said that they were unaware what it was, and that the site had originally been created by their fans.

Their first single with Domino, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", was released on 17 October 2005 and went straight to #1 on the UK Singles Chart, beating Sugababes and Robbie Williams. Two weeks previous to this, they made their first appearance on the cover of NME.
